    Hello there,

In fact, the two ways to power on the cameras are stable. If you want to extend the distance between the cameras and the NVR, you can power on the cameras using the 12V power supply.

If you do not want to extend the distance, please plug the cameras into the NVR directly because it is more convenient.

Besides, the NVR only sends power when there are cameras.

David I am sure you have long figured out the info your looking for.. However there are some things people might want to keep in mind. When you make a connection to a POE NVR you will most times loose the ability to make changes to the cameras config. (Meaning if they are to old the NVR might not want to make simple changes for like color hue and the like) however if the NVR offers a Virtual Host option you can like on one of my Different company NVR I can log in my NVR's WebUI, CLick on camera, click on the e next to connected cameras in list and it will log me into a port that will let me make adjustments like I have it connected over my normal network IP..  If your NVR don't offer this then most times people will take a camera they are working with and connect to a POE Injector or a POE Switch and make adjustments to the cameras settings and then return to the POE NVR's port for service to return..

About your NVR most NVR and POE devices are not FULL power and won't destroy non POE devices. I have some cameras that are non POE cameras connected to my POE NVR and there is no outside access to the camera On the display of the NVR in the view for the camera it shows a POE Icon as it is connected to the POE port even though there is no power going down the Cable the camera has a PDU 12v power supply cable connected. Others might not have any PDU and use Wall Worts. I have many cameras and have many different PDU's to power my cameras.
